  • A Beautifully Executed Cherry Chest of Drawers Attributed to Nathan Lombard

  • Sutton, Massachusetts, c 1800
  • Inventory Number: 1016
  • The bow shaped top, likely an older replacement, above four graduated drawers each having horizontal grain veneer, the whole raised on bracket feet.

This chest of drawers is very similar to a small group of furniture that recent scholarship has attributed to Nathan Lombard of Lower Worcester County, Massachusetts. There are four similar chests that were pictured in William H. Short's December, 1991 The Magazine Antiques article entitled New Additions to a Group of Federal Furniture, pages 964-5. More information about Nathan Lombard and the four bow front chests that are known by him is in Brock Jobe and Clark Pearce, Sophistication in Rural Massachusetts: The Inlaid Cherry Furniture of Nathan Lombard, pages 164 - 196, figures 22 and 23, in American Furniture, 1998.
